Illicit Drugs smuggled into parish jail

TPSO Report

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports the following arrest:

On July 3, 2017, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Travis Pitman arrested 40-year old Floyd Perry of Independence on multiple charges. They include possession of CDS II, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and introduction of contraband into a penal institution on June 29, 2017.

Also arrested was Perry’s passenger, John McLeod, 19, of Hammond, charged with two felony failure to appear in court warrants and a parole violation.

On June 29, 2017, a “be on the look out” (BOLO)  alert was sent out to members of law enforcement in the Tangipahoa Parish area  regarding a silver Suzuki SUV with a broken out back glass after being observed on surveillance cameras leaving contraband in particular area at the parish jail.

In the late afternoon hours of July 3, 2017, Perry was taken into custody after his vehicle was observed traveling northbound on SW Railroad before entering the Dollar General Store parking lot.

Upon making contact, it was confirmed that the driver was indeed the wanted subject alleged to have introduced contraband into the Tangipahoa Parish Correctional Facility on June 29, 2017.

During the roadside investigation as deputies were approaching the vehicle, Perry passed illegal narcotics to a 13-year-old juvenile who was in the back seat. The substance was later identified as powder cocaine packaged for street level distribution. Subsequent to being advised of the Miranda Warning, Perry provided a statement where he admitted to dropping a package containing contraband over the perimeter fence at the Tangipahoa Parish Correctional Facility on June 29, 2017.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs Office will continue to aggressively investigate all matters surrounding jail security, the introduction of contraband into the correctional facility and crimes committed within the parish.

Anyone with information about contraband being introduced to the jail please contact the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs Office at 985-345-6150.
